For the Chridtmas bash, please bring food and drink that you would like to share with us from your culture - Christmas or any other festival food. (Please label it, and label the contents). About the Workshop

This workshop deals with SEN and inclusion.

Firstly, we’ll deal with 5 ‘learning difficulties’, what they mean, and how you could recognise them:
  • dyslexia
  • dyspraxia
  • dysphasia
  • autism
  • AD(H)D
Secondly, we’ll do a case-study with examples from practice (my work as a teacher).
Then thirdly, we’ll address ‘inclusion’ by having a good look at lesson materials. We’ll adapt and/or create, and have a look at a few online ESL/EFL programs for children + 1 for teens and adults that you can also use in a brick-and-mortar classroom.
Bring your own laptop if you can!

There’ll be plenty room for discussion, also about the French school system and how they handle ‘inclusion’. I’m hoping to send you home with lots of on hand information and tips that you can use in your work as a teacher.

Saskia Disant helps students with learning difficulties gain insight and structure, so that they can discover their strengths, develop self-confidence, and enjoy learning English.
In 1992 ‘inclusion’ became the new norm in the Netherlands. Children with learning difficulties such as dyslexia and/or mild physical handicap were moved from specialized schools to regular schools. This at first caused a situation. All of a sudden, these children attended classes but teachers hadn't received any training. Yet they were expected to deliver the same quality of education to a group sometimes up to 39 children.
Saskia was fortunate to work at a school where this problem was dealt with in a positive and active manner. She attended seminars organised by the school councillor. She learned to teach and accompany the children and to collaborate with the parents.
After working in the Netherlands for 12 years, she moved to France in 2012 where she became and EFL teacher. Since July 2020 she has been self-employed, working partly from home but mostly for a language school in Albi.

30 June 2019

Eyes Open: What the eyes see... (-isms and issues: why, how and should we bother?)

with Fiona Mauchline

Time: 9.30 am - 12.30 pm
Venue: IH Toulouse / the Cambridge Centre, 23 Ave G Brassens, 31700 Blagnac

About the Workshop

Eyes open:
What the eyes see…. (-isms and issues: why, how and should we bother?)
With a packed schedule, an over-loaded syllabus, and more buzz words than bees, is there space-time for dealing with global issues in the English classroom on top of everything else? Is it helpful or useful to even try? And if so, how do we do it in a way that will engage our teens (and adults) rather than turn them off? This idea-filled, participative session will look at how and why using various kinds of visuals can bring global issues and critical thinking into the teen and adult classroom in ways that open students’ eyes and minds, and create memorable language learning moments. We hope it will also be fun

Eyes shut:
Teaching with eyes closed: senses as the route to learning

Recent research suggests that activating the senses at the same time as language helps maximise learning. Add to this a little Vygotsky, and we have the basis for some highly engaging activities that activate the brain and facilitate the formation of memory and the generation of language. In this workshop, we’ll tickle our senses and try a few activities, then reflect on how and why they work. Be prepared to close your eyes in order to open them to possibility.

Fiona Mauchline is a freelance ELT writer, teacher, and trainer. Her courses include Motivate! (Macmillan Education) and the new summer course Dive In! (Delta Publishing, 2019), both for teenagers. Her resource books include How to write secondary materials (ELTTeacher2Writer) and this month’s Etpedia Vocabulary (Pavilion Publishing). She is also the co-founder of EVE: Equal Voices in ELT, and a committee member for both IATEFL TDSIG and IATEFL MaWSIG. She has a love of photography, art, creative and screenwriting, and ‘brain science’, all of which spread to her work.
