Empowering ELT Teachers: Teaching and learning Through the Arts
by Dr. Maher Bahloul (American University of Sharjah)
The current study shows that teaching and learning in and through the arts empowers teachers and students rendering the traditional issues of management (i.e., training, time, place, culture, behavior, satisfaction, etc.) much less challenging. I will show a number of curricula that have strong learning through arts programs which laid grounds for effective managerial skills. The audience will also watch samples of such arts activities which show both teachers and students managers within their respective spaces. In short, incorporating arts into the curriculum and learning through arts are the keys to positive and efficient educational management.Dr. Maher Bahloul holds an MA in Linguistics from the Sorbonne University and a Ph.D from Cornell University, USA. Dr. Bahloul has been teaching MA TESOL courses for the past 7 years. His research interests cover issues in theoretical linguistics, applied linguistics, and language pedagogy. He has taught in the United States, North Africa, and the Middle East. He is Associate Professor at the American University of Sharjah, and currently on sabbatical in Paris.
Give Yourself a Pay rise! How to multiply your EFL salary by 10
by Carol Bausor (ILTC, Societe de Formation Continue en Langues)
This presentation springs from the postulate that being a successful EFL trainer is a highly skilled, challenging job. So how come it is so often badly paid? I will be examining the limits posed by the so-called "market price" for EFL services in France, and explaining why they should not be a limiting factor for ambitious teachers who want to get ahead and... earn a higher salary. I will further be exploring the idea that teachers are often their own worst enemies when it comes to career development, and will give some practical guidelines so that participants can leave with ideas and an action plan. This is a resolutely optimistic presentation, based on my own experience as a Trainer, a Consultant and a company owner.Carol Bausor is English, but she fell in love with France at the age of 13, and, arranged to move there (ostensibly for one year) as soon as she possibly could. Over 30 years later, she's still here, still enjoying life, France, and her job. She originally began teaching English to 3-10 year olds because someone suggested it "might be fun" (it was). Since then she has taught in a French Collège, a Lycée, at University, in an Engineering School, and in many different contexts in Adult Education. She has also organized and taught different Trainer Training Sessions, including training Instructors on a Full Scope Simulator on a Nuclear Power Plant. She is at present the owner of ILTC (International Language & Training Consultants), which is located in Paris, Lyon, Aix en Provence, and Algiers. She is proud of the fact that ILTC has always had an ongoing in-house Trainer Training Programme, and that the company motto is Révelateur de Compétences, which she translates as "Revealing your talent" - a statement which applies not only to all those who follow ILTC training programmes, but to the personnel as well!

Does My Bum Look Big in This? How feedback changes everything
by Duncan Foord (Oxford TEFL and Delta Publishing)
Feedback is a great accelerator for professional development. Everything you ever wanted to know about yourself, your students, your job and your haircut is just a couple of questions away, but you usually don't ask them. Why? We'll consider that and then look at some ways of helping the people who matter in your work (students, colleagues, bosses…) tell you what they really think of your work. The talk includes some pairwork and audience participation, but you won't have to try on any clothes!Duncan Foord has been in ELT since 1984. He started his ELT life as a language assistant in a secondary school in Lyon, France. He has also worked in London, Oviedo, Prague and Barcelona. He's taught English to all sorts of people (and a bit of German once), trained teachers on Trinity CertTESOL and Dip TESOL courses and worked as a Director of Studies and school manager. Foord is co-founder of OxfordTEFL, a teacher training and language training school with centres in Prague and Barcelona so he has had quite a bit of involvement with both the academic and business sides of ELT. He also works for Trinity College London, moderating CertTESOL courses. He has completed Cert, Dip and MEdTESOL qualifications. The Developing Teacher(Delta Publishing), 2009 winner of The Duke of Edinburgh ESU English Language Book Award, is Foord's second book. The first is the Language Teacher's Survival Handbook, co-authored with Lindsay Clandfield and published by Its Magazines. Foord has lived in Barcelona for the last 18 years.
Walk Slow: An overview to ELT management and the International Diploma in Language Teaching Management (IDLTM)
by Roger Hunt (International House Barcelona)
The language teaching business has been expanding rapidly and globally for many years. This expansion has not only created a demand for language teachers, but also a demand for qualified managers of language teaching centres. New managers are often teachers and while they may be excellent teachers, they may not always be successful or well prepared managers. In this talk I will give an overview to the IDLTM course with reference to a number of short case studies intended to exemplify the topics and management skills included on the IDLTM course.Roger Hunt is Director of Education at International House Barcelona where he is responsible for educational development in both teaching and teacher training. He has worked in ELT for thirty years in many parts of the world as a teacher, teacher trainer and educational manager. He is currently involved in writing and tutoring on the IH Barcelona on-line teacher training courses. He is co-author of Fountain (Longman, 1992), and TKT preparation course (McGraw Hill, 2008). He has also published numerous articles on language teaching and teacher training.

Participants will be shown how to navigate the Internet effectively to find valuable pedagogical materials. This will be followed by a demonstration on how to utilize these resources effectively. Participants will also be shown how to maximize their tech-time with students and how to guide language learners through the maze of online resources. Workshop participants will receive attractive handouts.
Dr. Catherine Jolivet-Buon is an Applied Linguist and Language Specialist. She is currently Languages Program Coordinator and Associate Professor of English and French at InterNapa College in Cyprus. Classical and Emerging Themes in Leadership and Management Thinking
by Arthur McKeown (Business Institute, University of Ulster, Northern Ireland)
The aim of the presentation is to help managers in language teaching organisations and teachers of management and business English to identify opportunities for using the approaches of some significant gurus in the management of their organisation, teams they manage and their own personal development. Those attending are challenged to identify, from a large number of possibilities, a smaller number that are worthy of further enquiry, to suit their particular needs.
The presentation has three elements:
- A review of some classical approaches to leadership and management,
- An overview of the recent contributions of some academics and practitioners.
- A series of examples of how those attending can access a range of 'user cuddly' resources to develop their knowledge and understanding of the approaches and contributions mentioned in the earlier sections.
The presentation is complemented by:
- A brief opportunity to ask questions and discuss issues raised,
- A simple self-assessment instrument to help those attending to identify gurus and approaches of particular interest to themselves, as a basis for follow-up activity,
- A companion Moodle, for convenient access to links mentioned during the delivery of the presentation.
Arthur McKeown works at the University of Ulster, where he teaches at the Business Institute in the Ulster Business School on a range of programmes for private, public and not for profit client organisations. He worked as a teacher, teacher trainer and manager in EFL for 15 years in Sweden, Libya and Kuwait as well as in the UK.
