Information about the Spring Day

How long has it been since you spent time evaluating yourself as a teacher? Come to our TESOL France one-day conference, on Saturday, June 11th at Telecom ParisTech entirely dedicated to answering the question “How good a teacher am I?”
 
Hands-on workshops, quizzes, presentations and open space Q&A sessions - all of these plus the Cambridge English Teaching Framework, a very useful tool we'll be using to structure our answers to this question. Are you a Foundation, Developing, Proficient or Expert teacher? How are you going to move forward from where you are right now?
 
We'll be helping you chart a path and we'll also be giving you practical assistance in making sure you have access to the tools needed to defend yourself in this new environment of France and the réforme. An important part of the legislation on formation professionnelle taking effect this year requires language schools, independents, and freelancers in general, to justify that they are 'good' teachers before they will be able to have access to funding, notably through the OPCAs. We will be welcoming SYCFI, the Syndicat de Consultants-Formateurs Indépendents to our Spring Day to help us understand how this is going to play out and how their quality label will help us.
 
Our moderator for the day will be Duncan Foord, author of the very popular book The Developing Teacher (DELTA publications) and long-time teacher trainer working for Trinity in Barcelona. Duncan will be joined by Andrew Nye from Cambridge English and together they will guide us through this fascinating day. We often feel we have a pretty good working appreciation of our skills as teachers but we rarely take the time to back-up these self-assessments with reliable criteria and consequently we're unable to present ourselves confidently when pushed for justification.
 
At TESOL France we believe that ultimately it is in our interest as teachers to shape up and take a long hard look at ourselves. We can only benefit from the process. Not only will we be better able to chart our professional development into the future, but we'll feel more in control of our careers and less at the mercy of outside elements which seem to be having an ever greater impact on our access to work. France may not seem a great place to be teaching in this year but, hey, let's make it work for us. You may be pleasantly surprised at the bulletin you hand in to yourself at the end of the conference.


Speaker Bios:
Duncan Foord
Duncan Foord is the Director of OxfordTEFL, Barcelona. He has 30 years experience in language teaching, teacher training and school leadership and management. He is the author of “From English Teacher to Learner Coach” (with Dan Barber, The Round 2014) The Developing Teacher (Delta Publishing, 2009) and The Language Teachers Survival Handbook with Lindsay Clandfield (Its Magazines, 2008).

Andrew Nye
Andrew Nye is Assistant Director Digital & New Product Development in Cambridge English, where he focuses much of his time on the area of teacher professional development. Before joining the organisation he worked in English Language Teaching for 12 years as a teacher, teacher trainer and academic manager.
