Lille Workshop

7 October 2017

Time: 10 am - 12 pm
Speaker:  Andreas Grundvig
Venue: SKEMA Business School, Avenue Willy Brandt, Lille

Registration details to follow!

About the Workshop

Nudge nudge, wink wink: classroom activities introducing indirectness strategies
  • Developing receptive skills
  • Critical thinking
  • Pronunciation and intonation
  • Pragmatic competence (indirectness & implicature)
Traditionally, language learning has paid little attention to the difference between what we say and what we mean. Many teachers already recognise the need for a more pragmatic approach to language teaching but practical ideas for the classroom remain few and far between. The workshop begins with a look at mutual cooperation in communicating our ideas and identifies the strategies of indirectness (such as (im)politeness theory) that we use to save face. Participants will be actively encouraged to discuss and reflect on personal examples of where they or their students have failed to understand what was communicated because of the speaker’s implied meaning. They will go away with a collection of new resources aimed at preparing their students for a number of contexts, from everyday social settings to business meetings and rounds of negotiations. Previously delivered at the IATEFL Conference and Exhibition, Harrogate, 2014

About the Speaker

Andreas is a regular conference speaker and also delivers training days for local Teacher associations. He teaches at the BMK (Media and Communication) School in Hamburg, Germany and manages the Cambridge Assessment Examinations Centre there. He has written teaching guides (which were illustrated by his Lithuanian wife) for Cornelsen’s Basis for Business Series and advised on coursebooks for Cornelsen and Cambridge University Press. He is passionate about pragmatics and the urban linguistic landscape as well as fostering learner autonomy and imaginative learning. Beginning his career in Spain in the 1990s, Andreas has spent over a decade in academic management, in countries as far afield as Portugal, Switzerland, Lithuania, France and Germany. His former students range from aircraft designers, cardiologists and politicians to sixyear olds. His first student ever was a famous songwriter (buy him a beer and he might tell you about this)! Andreas was born in Sweden and grew up and graduated in Suffolk, England. He lives in Germany but also spends much of his time at his second home in Lithuania.

Previous workshops delivered for:  British Council, Cambridge Assessment, Pilgrims, Spraklärornas Riksförbund Lietuvos anglu kalbos mokytoju asociacija ’LAKMA’ , TESOL Spain, Cornelsen Verlag

June 24th 2017: English as a Lingua Franca and the ‘native speaker’ debate:    practical classroom ideas for English teachers

Date: June 24th, 2017
Time: 10:00am - 1:00pm
Venue: SKEMA Business School, Lille
Theme: English as a Lingua Franca and the ‘native speaker’ debate: practical classroom ideas for English teachers
Speaker: Marek Kiczkowiak
Online registration is available here.

Marek has already received praise for this workshop in Strasbourg, Lyon, and Grenoble and now he's coming to Lille.  To get a sneak peek on what it'll all be about, listen to our latest podcast interview with Marek.

It is taken for granted that students prefer 'native speaker' teachers. It is also taken for granted that students prefer and should aspire to learn ‘native-like’ English. And as a result, the ‘native speaker’ is seen as not only a better language model, but also a better teacher. However, does this really reflect our students’ language goals and needs?
We won't know until we ask them.
So in this 3-hour session we will discuss:
1.      English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) and its implications for ELT;
2.      Raising students’ awareness of the global nature of English;
3.      The myths concerning 'native' and 'non-native speaker’ teachers;
4.      Recruitment policies in ELT vs. the qualities and skills of effective teachers;
5.      Teaching pronunciation and how we can help learners be more intelligible in international settings;
6.      Using non-native speakers as valid models of the English language;
7.      Adapting your course book to suit the ELF perspective

By the end of the session, you will have a better understanding of ELF and its practical implications for ELT. You will learn how to help learners improve their pronunciation and why ‘non-native speakers’ can also be good models of the English language. You will also walk away with an array of ideas and classroom activities aiming to move towards a more lingua franca and international view of the English language.

Speaker's Bio
Marek is originally from Poland and since doing the CELTA and graduating with a BA degree in English Philology, he has taught English in seven countries in Europe and Latin America. He is currently based in Leuven, Belgium, where he teaches academic English at the local university. He also holds Cambridge DELTA and is working towards a PhD in TESOL at the University of York. He has published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at international conferences. His research interests are English as a Lingua Franca and native speakerism in ELT. He advocates equal professional opportunities for ‘non-native’ English speaking teachers through TEFL Equity Advocates (www.teflequityadvocates.com), co-authors The TEFL Show podcasts (www.theteflshow.com) and keeps a now sporadically updated blog about ELT at TEFL Reflections (www.teflreflections.wordpress .com). He also gives face-to-face and on-line teacher training sessions about native speakerism and English as a Lingua Franca.  He’s also a keen language learner and is currently learning his 7th, Dutch.

After many years of teaching English as a Foreign Language in language schools and companies, I attended a TESOL France workshop (given by Tonya Trappe, for those who know her) in Paris about 6 years ago : using drama techniques in the classroom.
This led me to join two theatre workshop groups, one in English and one in French. The fun and enjoyment I experienced in using my imagination and overcoming my inhibitions convinced me that using some of these techniques with our students is an ideal way to conquer shyness, stimulate creative instincts and build confidence when learning a foreign language.
So I invite you all to share with me some activities and ideas on how we can loosen the tongues and build the confidence of our students in an admosphere both relaxed and non-judgemental.
Your own ideas are very welcome.

Are your students completely absorbed and participatory? Great classes are clearly structured, but learning to re-imagine your lessons as stories - with beginning-middle-end and built-in problem resolution - quickly engages learners through a completely different motivational dynamic. Here, real results exemplify experimentation with narrative classes from a new teacher training programme. You'll watch video interviews with teachers, see the plans, then try it yourself!
