The best educational technologies enable teachers do more with fewer resources. This workshop will show you how to create a collaborative online workspace for your students through Wikispaces/PBWorks. A wiki is a web site that allows your students to become participants. It's a living collaboration whose purpose is the sharing of the creative process. I'll share some fun content that I've used with my own student Wikis like Fotobabbles, Padlets, Screencast-o-matic and Thinglinks to name just a few. Collaborative learning opens up so many possibilities for your students to learn English through active engagement and participation. This will be a BYOD (bring your own device) session. Please bring your laptop or plan to share with a friend.
About the speaker
Sara Carlesimo was born in Palm Springs, California, but has lived in France for the past 24 years.
She attended Chapman University in Orange, California; where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Relations. She completed a Master of Arts degree in Educational Technology with Central Michigan University's Global Campus in 2016.
She began teaching in a bilingual French school in 1993 and quickly learned to love it. In the past 24 years, she has has taught English in France to every grade level from PSM to CM2 as well as tutoring junior/high school/adult students with online tech tools.
My goal is to make learning English a fun experience for ALL of my students. I want them to be able to say, “My favorite subject in school was English, because I learned AND I had fun!"

At some stage in their career, language teachers will get involved in planning a course programme, whether in a large institution for a course taught over a significant length of time, or for a course geared towards the needs of a specific group of learners during an intensive.
Choices of syllabus can range from the more or less purely linguistic, where the grammatical and lexical forms of the language constitute the content of instruction, to the more or less purely task-based where the emphasis is on some real-world or simulated real-world outcome with the overt teaching of language taking the back seat or being dealt with as an outcome of the task performance itself.
Whatever the situation, the principles of syllabus design will come into play. In this talk I will discuss the types of syllabus that are possible together with their strengths and weaknesses and introduce some practical ideas on how to design a coherent syllabus that takes into account the context and wishes of the various stakeholders involved.
Speaker's bio
Peter has spent most of his career in France and until 2007 was employed as a lecturer at the University of London Institute in Paris. Subsequently, he has taught technical translation for the automotive industry in India and run intensive courses at the École nationale de la magistrature, the Collège de France and the École normale supérieure. He also works as a tutor on the DELTA teacher training course run in both distance and face-to-face mode with The ELT Hub, Strasbourg.

TESOL France Lyon invites you to share with fellow professionals a PBL initiative that you have done with your students. This could be anything from videos and sketches to business plans or pitches. Take us through the steps; what worked? What needed improvement? How did your project motivate your students? How did it help them acquire skills and language relevant to them? What was the reaction from your students? What platforms were used to present your project?
This is the opportunity to get ideas for future projects as well and sharing and getting feedback for your own project. Let’s share our wealth of experience and resources and come away motivated and inspired by one another.

It is taken for granted that students prefer ‘native speaker’ teachers. It is also taken for granted that students prefer and should aspire to learn ‘native-like’ English. And as a result, the ‘native speaker’ is seen as not only a better language model, but also a better teacher. However, this really reflect our students’ language goals and needs?
We won’t know until we ask them.
So in this 3-hour session we will discuss:
1. English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) is and why it is important for ELT;
2. Raising students’ awareness of the global nature of English;
3. The myths concerning ‘native’ and ‘non-native speaker’ teachers;
4. Recruitment policies in ELT vs. the qualities and skills of effective teachers;
5. Teaching pronunciation and how we can help learners be more intelligible in international settings;
6. Using non-native speakers as valid models of the English language;
7. Adapting your course book to suit the ELF perspective
By the end of the session you will have a better understanding of ELF and its practical implications for ELT. You will learn how to help learners improve their pronunciation and why ‘non-native speakers’ can also be good models of the English language. You will also walk away with an array of ideas and classroom activities aiming to move towards a more lingua franca and international view of the English language.
Marek Kiczkowiak has taught English in 7 countries and currently works as an EAP lecturer in KU Leuven, Belgium. He holds a BA in English, CELTA, DELTA and is currently doing a PhD in TESOL. He co-authors ELT podcasts at www.theteflshow.com and advocates professional equality between ‘native’ and ‘non-native speakers’ at www.teflequityadvocates.com. He frequently presents at international conferences and gives teacher training sessions focusing on ELF and native speakerism. Apart from face-to-face sessions, he also delivers online courses at http://tefl-equity-courses.teachable.com

Whether it be the TOEIC, IELTS or BULATS, exam training can be a pretty dry affair, creating restless students and bored teachers. But exams don’t have to equal apathy or stifle participation and creativity ! Come along to the swaphop and learn how your peers overcome the challenges of exam training and come away with lots of innovative ideas to get students engaged in exam preparation. All we ask is that you also bring along a tried and tested activity that’s worked for you in exam training and share this with the group.

Workshop: Apply This! An Educational Technology workshop

Technology will not replace teachers, but teachers who use technology will replace those who do not. The latter may be debatable, but when done right, technology can make teacher’s lives easier and liven up the classroom.
This workshop will demonstrate various PowerPoint games, applications, and other favorite ed-tech tools and websites. Some say getting information off the internet is like taking a drink from a fire hydrant. It is in my hopes that after this interactive workshop participants will walk away will a full glass. This will be a BYOD (bring your own device) session. Come ready with a laptop, tablet, or smartphone.
Jeremy Levin
With an American father and French mother, Jeremy has been split between two cultures and two languages his entire life. Born and raised on the outskirts of Philadelphia, Jeremy moved to Lille, France in 2003. With a Bachelor’s in French-English language studies, it made sense for him to start his career in translation, but he soon realized that something was missing, and it was that he’d rather work with people than sit behind a computer screen all day. 2006 marks the beginning of his teaching career and it has become his passion ever since. Jeremy specializes in grammar games and educational technology. He loves finding ways of making subjects that people typically think are boring into something fun. When he’s not teaching you may find him working on his electronic music mixes, his second passion in life.

Summary
“When I obtained my TESOL certificate in 1997 before moving to France, I wanted to use Drama as an English teaching method. Some of what I have tried has worked, and this workshop will be centered on the tested and successful uses of Drama which are accessible to a non-specialist in Drama.
Drama can bring so much to the classroom:
• Displacement, where another activity becomes the focus and language use and learning takes place on a secondary level.
• Pleasure while learning, where an interesting and enjoyable activity reinforces the learning process.
• Becoming more at ease and understanding communication in general.
I'll describe what I have done and what works, as well as demonstrating some practical start-points in the form of simple exercises or games which I use.”
Alexander Laube
Raised in New-Zealand, he directed his first play ’The Magic Hand’ by Phillip Mann, for families, in 1983. 1986 marked the start of his professional career, working in a number of fields - notably producing a number of plays with psychiatric patients and staff. He also wrote for the theatre, and formed Moonbeam Theatre with a small group of other actors. Moonbeam Theatre worked intensively, performed around New Zealand, centred in Dunedin. After training in London, and performing at the Edinburgh Fringe, he returned to NZ where he obtained a degree in Theatre Studies at Otago University, working as a professional actor and director as well as teaching theatre. Moving to France in 1997, he formed the Flying Pig Theatre Company in 2003, and Line Theatre in 2011. While developing the activity of the company and directing, he continues to act, direct, teach and occasionally write for the company and other organisations.

Reading is key! The Key to Reading!
Whether you are already using readers in your English classes, would like to, but haven't yet had the opportunity, or believe readers have no place in your curriculum, everyone can benefit from Black Cat's innovative expansive reading approach. Exploiting Films and Video Clips in your English Classes
Have you ever thought about introducing a grammar topic through film, perfecting your students' presentation skills through a movie clip, or even having your students act in class? Film can open your students up to a world of English they might not otherwise have the opportunity to experience or understand. Many teachers, however, believe film takes up precious classroom time and is difficult to exploit without a lot of outside preparation. Come discover easy ways to exploit videos in your English classes at all levels and get ready to get your students speaking, writing and listening through film.
Katie Cóspito is a teacher, teacher trainer, and the representative for Black Cat books in France. After three years in Spain teaching English to students from 2-18, she decided to try her hand in the editorial world and made the leap to leaving in France. Working now with Black Cat allows her to speak to teachers and lead training sessions all over the country. Drawing on her past experiences as an uninitiated, young teacher, she knows far too well the difficulty which comes with juggling over 800 students, but also the joy in being a student’s first connection with the English-speaking world. She is enthusiastic therefore, about finding teachers the best books available and giving them all the tools to more easily incorporate new English materials in their classes. Katie continues giving English classes to young learners, not having been able to leave teaching completely behind. Trilingual, and an avid traveler, she hopes to soon start training teachers in other areas of the world.

Get your students speaking!
One of the biggest problems we can face in our classrooms is actually getting students to express themselves in English. How many times have we heard "I can understand, but I just can’t speak"?. This inability (or lack of willingness sometimes) can be put down to a variety of reasons, but one things for sure, it can be a real challenge for teachers to get these students to become comfortable expressing themselves.
But once students are chatting away, how can we make sure that they are acquiring the language that they need effectively?
Get your students writing!
Writing can often be considered as a solitary activity with many teachers preferring to give writing tasks for homework, in order to avoid a silent classroom. But writing can be a collaborative task and has its place in an dynamic classroom.
If two heads are better then one, then many teachers are...
Other teachers are the biggest and most powerful resource that we have. The aim of the swap shop is to feed off each other’s expertise. Each participant brings a speaking and/or writing activity that’s really worked for them and demonstrates it in small groups to the other participants. You bring along one idea and you will come away with an array of effective speaking and writing activities for your classroom! The ideas don’t have to be revolutionary, but just something that works for you, from a tried and tested warmer to a fun activity encouraging language accuracy. Let’s work together to make ourselves more innovative teachers!
